Origin: A borrowing from Greek; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymon: Greek ϕύλαξις.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ϕύλαξις watching, guarding, a security < ϕυλακ- , stem of ϕυλάσσειν to guard (see phylactery n.) + -σις -sis suffix, after French phylaxie (1902 or earlier in sense 1, 1931 in the source translated in quot. 19311 at sense 2). With sense 1 compare anaphylaxis n.
