单词 phylacist
释义

phylacistn.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin phylacista.
Etymology: < classical Latin phylacista jailer (Plautus, though the reading is uncertain) < Byzantine Greek ϕυλακιστής (although apparently recorded later in Greek than in Latin) < ϕυλακ- , stem of ϕυλάσσειν to guard (see phylactery n.) + -ιστής -ist suffix. Compare French †phylaciste (1611 in Cotgrave). It is possible that the Greek word is borrowed from the Latin word, which would thus have been formed < ancient Greek ϕυλακ- , stem of ϕυλάσσειν to guard + classical Latin -ista -ist suffix.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
A jailer.
