Etymology: < ancient Greek ϕυγο- shunning, combining form (in e.g. ϕυγοπτόλεμος shunning war, cowardly; < the aorist stem of ϕεύγειν to flee, shun < the same Indo-European base as Lithuanian baugus fearful, timid; an ablaut variant of this base gives rise to ancient Greek ϕυγή : see phugoid adj. and n.) + ancient Greek γαλακτ-, γάλα milk (see galactic adj.) + -ic suffix. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (fi:goˌgălæ·ktik) /ˌfɪɡəʊɡəˈlæktɪk/.
