Etymology: < phyco- comb. form + ancient Greek ἐρυθρός red (see erythro- comb. form) + -in suffix1, after German Phykoërythrin ( F. T. Kützing Phycologia generalis (1843) 23).
Biochemistry.
Any of various red phycobiliprotein pigments that are the dominant photosynthetic pigments in most red algae and also occur in blue-green algae.

1866 H. Watts Dict. Chem. IV. 633 Phycocyan, and Phycoerythrin, these names are applied by Kützing to a blue and red colouring matter, apparently of the same composition, existing in several red sea-weeds.

Sci. 7 210 The red-brown colouring matter of the Florideæ—namely the rhodophyll of Cohn—is..a compound body, consisting of Cohn's chlorophyll and phycoerythrin, neither of which are analogous to Kützing's phykoerythrin (which is rhodophyll), or to Nägeli's phycoerythrin (which is a purple modification of phycochrome).
