Origin: Probably a borrowing from French. Etymon: French picage.
Etymology: Probably < Anglo-Norman picage, pichage, pikage, pykage (1364 or earlier), apparently < pic pickaxe (see pike n.1) + -age -age suffix. Compare post-classical Latin picagium (frequently 1156–1526 in British sources).
Now historical.
A toll paid for breaking the ground in setting up a booth, stall, tent, etc., at a fair or market; (also) the right to collect such a toll.
