Etymology: < ancient Greek ϕυγή flight (see note) + -oid suffix, with the Greek word erroneously being taken as representing the sense of flight n.¹Ancient Greek ϕυγή flight is < the same Indo-European base as classical Latin fuga (see fugue n.); an ablaut variant of this base gives rise to ancient Greek ϕεύγειν to flee (see phygogalactic adj. and n.).
