Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ϕυγή , -oid suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ϕυγή flight (see note) + -oid suffix, with the Greek word erroneously being taken as representing the sense of flight n.1Ancient Greek ϕυγή flight is < the same Indo-European base as classical Latin fuga (see fugue n.); an ablaut variant of this base gives rise to ancient Greek ϕεύγειν to flee (see phygogalactic adj. and n.).

Of or relating to the longitudinal stability of an aircraft or missile flying a nominally horizontal course in a vertical plane; spec. designating a slow fore-and-aft or pitching oscillation in which the flight path assumes the form of a series of shallow waves and the aircraft undergoes synchronous increases and decreases of speed.
