Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin phthongus , -al suffix1; Greek ϕθόγγος , -al suffix1.
Etymology: < classical Latin phthongus a sound, a tone or its etymon ancient Greek ϕθόγγος a sound, the voice ( < an ablaut variant of the base of ϕθεγγέσθαι to utter a sound or voice, of unknown origin) + -al suffix1. Compare earlier diphthongal adj., monophthongal adj. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (fþ-, þǫ·ŋgăl) /fθ-/ /ˈθɒŋɡəl/.
Phonetics. Obsolete. rare.
Of a sound: voiced; capable of varying in pitch.
