Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ϕθισ- , ϕθίνειν , ζῷον , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ϕθισ-, future and aorist stem of ϕθίνειν to decay, perish (see phthisis n.), used in causal sense, to cause to perish, to destroy + ζῷον animal (see zoon n.) + -ic suffix: see -ic suffix 2.Ancient Greek ϕθισ- is used as a combining form in e.g. ϕθισήνωρ destroying men.
rare (now historical).
Bentham's term for: the branch of science that deals with methods of destroying pests.
