Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Phthīrophagī , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin Phthīrophagī lice-eaters, the name given to a tribe living near the Black Sea ( < Hellenistic Greek Φθειροϕάγοι < ancient Greek ϕθείρ louse (see phthiriasis n.) + -ϕάγος eating: see -phagous comb. form) + -ous suffix. Compare French phthirophage (1838 or earlier).In form phtheirophagous after Hellenistic Greek Φθειροϕάγοι.
