Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin phthīriāsis.
Etymology: < classical Latin phthīriāsis infestation with lice < ancient Greek ϕθειρίασις < ϕθειριᾶν to be infested with lice ( < ϕθείρ louse: see note) + -σις -sis suffix. Compare Middle French phtiriasie, phtiriasis, phtiriase, phthiriasis (1546 in form phtiriasie; French phtiriase, phtiriasis), Italian ftiriasi (a1564), Spanish ptiriasis (1509 as tiriasis; also as ftiriasis).Ancient authors derive ancient Greek ϕθείρ louse < ϕθείρειν to destroy (see phthartic adj.), as they believed that lice were generated spontaneously in decaying flesh. Modern scholars generally accept this derivation. In form phtheiriasis after ancient Greek ϕθειρίασις . N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (fþ-, þəiəriˌēi·sis) /fθ-/ /θaɪərɪˈeɪsɪs/ (compare quot. 1605).
Medicine.
Infestation with lice; (in later use) spec. infestation with pubic (crab) lice ( Phthirus pubis). Cf. pediculosis n.
