Origin: Perhaps a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Perhaps formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: phthisis n., -o- connective, alcohol n., Latin color.

Etymology: < phthi- (in phthisis n.) + -o- connective + -col (perhaps representing alcohol n., with reference to its having been obtained by means of an alcohol-ether extract, or perhaps representing classical Latin color colour n.¹, with reference to its being a pigment: see quot. 1933). Compare earlier phthioic adj.

1985 Jrnl. Org. Chem. 50 3358/1 Phthiocol, a metabolic product of the human tubercle bacillus, was analogously obtained in 86% yield from the quinone.
