Etymology: < ancient Greek ϕθαρτικός destructive < an ablaut variant of the base of ϕθείρειν to destroy ( < the same Indo-European base as Sanskrit kṣarati it flows, (later) it runs out, wastes away, Avestan γžar- to flow) + -τικός , suffix forming adjectives from verbs (compare -ic suffix).Compare post-classical Latin phtharticum , noun:1684 tr. S. Blankaart Physical Dict. 230 Phtharticum is a corrupting medicine. R. G. Mayne (see quot. 1858) gives a Latin form phtharticus, adjective.
