Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ϕροντιστής.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ϕροντιστής a deep thinker < ϕροντίζειν to consider, to be thoughtful ( < ϕροντίς thought, reflection ( < an ablaut variant of the base of ϕρεν- , ϕρήν mind: see phren n.) + -ίζειν -ize suffix) + -τής , suffix forming agent nouns. Compare German Frontistes (1813 in the passage discussed in quot. 1822).The Greek word was ironically applied to Socrates by Aristophanes ( Clouds 266). Compare post-classical Latin phrontista a steward (a1522), French phrontiste a contemplative, especially a Christian one (a1752).

A person devoted to studious meditation; a deep thinker. Cf. phrontisterion n.

1822 T. Mitchell in tr. Aristophanes Comedies II. 18 (note) The poet in nick-naming Socrates a Phrontist, meant to describe him as a sort of ennuyé, triste, pitiable busy-idler.
1916 B. B. Rogers in tr. Aristophanes Clouds p. xvii, in Comedies II Strepsiades is consulting the statue of Hermes as to the steps which he had better take to avenge himself on the Phrontists.
