Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German phronetal.
Etymology: < German phronetal (in Phronetal-Zelle : E. Haeckel Die Lebenswunder (1904) i. 15: see quot. 1904) < phronet- , taken as stem of ancient Greek ϕρόνησις thought, sense, judgement (see phronesis n.; compare Hellenistic Greek ϕρονητικός concerned with thought) + German -al -al suffix1.
Biology. rare.
Chiefly in the terminology of Haeckel: of or relating to the mental processes of thought; cognitive.
