Etymology: < classical Latin phronēsis wisdom, in post-classical Latin also wisdom personified (4th cent.) < ancient Greek ϕρόνησις thought, sense, judgement, practical wisdom, prudence < ϕρονεῖν to think, to have understanding, to be wise, prudent ( < an ablaut variant of the base of ϕρεν- , ϕρήν mind: see phren n.) + -σις -sis suffix. With sense 2 compare French phronésis, phronèsis, phronesis (1840 or earlier), German Phronesis (1882 or earlier).
