Etymology: < post-classical Latin phreniticus (4th cent.), variant of classical Latin phrenēticus frenetic adj. after its ultimate etymon ancient Greek ϕρενιτικός suffering from inflammation of the brain < ϕρενῖτις phrenitis n. + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare earlier frenetic adj., frantic adj.
Medicine. Now rare (historical).
