Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Greek ϕράτωρ, ϕράτηρ.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek ϕράτωρ, variant (see below) of ancient Greek ϕράτηρ clansman < the same Indo-European base as brother n. and int. Compare post-classical Latin phrator (1796).Hellenistic Greek ϕράτωρ is found in manuscripts as a variant of ancient Greek ϕράτηρ; according to Hellenistic Greek and Byzantine Greek grammarians it represents a later form.
