The quality of the vowel in Middle English is also uncertain; the majority of the forms suggest ī , but compare the rhyme in quot. c1460, and compare also the form pere (see quot. 1449).Perhaps compare German regional (Low German) piren to search closely, to collect carefully (although this is most frequently assumed to be related to pieren to tease, to annoy, and puren to annoy, to poke). It is tempting to see a connection with peer v.³ 2, but this would be difficult to explain formally; compare also pore v. and pry v.¹ and discussion at those entries.

Obsolete (English regional (Northamptonshire) in later use).
