pignoratev.

Brit. /ˈpɪɡnəreɪt/, U.S. /ˈpɪɡnəˌreɪt/
Forms: 1600s–1800s pignerate, 1600s– pignorate.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin pignerāt-, pignerāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin pignerāt-, past participial stem (compare -ate suffix3) of pignerāre (in post-classical Latin also pignorare ) to give as a pledge < pigner- (also pignor- ), pignus pledge (perhaps < the stem of pingere paint v.1 + a suffix of Indo-European origin forming legal terms relating to property, also seen in e.g. fēnus interest (see fenerate v.); the word would thus originally have denoted a mark made to record a pledge). Compare earlier pignoration n.
Now rare (chiefly Law, esp. Roman Law).
transitive. To give or take as a pledge; to pawn.
