Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin piceus , -in suffix1.
Etymology: < classical Latin piceus pitchy (see piceous adj.) + -in suffix1; in sense 1 after French picéine (C. Tanret 1894, in Comptes rendus hebd. de l'Acad. des Sci. 119 80).
1. Chemistry. A glucoside present in various trees, esp. willows and conifers; p-hydroxyacetophenone-β-glucoside, CH3·CO·C6H4·O·C6H11O5.
