单词 photosyntax
释义

photosyntaxn.

Brit. /fəʊtə(ʊ)ˈsɪntaks/, U.S. /ˌfoʊdəˈsɪnˌtæks/
Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: photo- comb. form, Greek σύνταξις.
Etymology: < photo- comb. form + ancient Greek σύνταξις putting together in order, arrangement (see syntaxis n.; compare syntax n.), though originally derived (see note) from ancient Greek συντάσσειν to put together in order (see syntaxis n.). Compare photosynthesis n.The word was proposed by C. R. Barnes at a session of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (botanical section) at Madison, Wisconsin, on 18 August 1893, as being more precise than the existing term assimilation . Reports of the session appeared in September (see quot. 1893), and Barnes's paper was published in November ( Bot. Gaz. 18 403–11). The word acquired some currency, but the alternative photosynthesis became more widely adopted, and photosyntax had effectively dropped out of use by the end of 1900.
Now historical and rare.
