Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: pie n.2, eyed adj.
Etymology: < pie n.2 + eyed adj. Compare earlier pie-faced adj. Sc. National Dict. s.v. pie v. regards pie-eyed as being developed from Scots pie to peer closely (early 19th cent.), but the central concept in the examples below seems to be ‘open-eyed’ and not ‘squinting’.
