Now rare.There are ‘Pye Books’ to Indictments extending as far back as 1660; but there is nothing to show when the term first came into use. It was in use in the Court of King's Bench early in the 18th cent. It was also fairly generally used in the Courts of the Palatinate of Lancaster, and the Indexes to the Affidavits, Declarations, and Sessional Papers were each styled ‘Pye Books’ (J. J. Cartwright, Sec. Publ. Rec. Office).
