Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian piffero.
Etymology: < Italian piffero (late 14th cent. in sense ‘a fife or pipe’, 1461 in sense ‘piper’) < Middle High German pfīfer piper (see fife n.). Compare French piffero (1874; 1765 as piffaro ), Catalan pífaro (1517; earlier as píferes , plural (1472)), Spanish pífaro (1517; now pífano (c1600)), Portuguese pífaro (1563; 1652 as pífano ). Compare piffer n.1
Any of various Italian woodwind instruments, esp. one with a double reed.Now usually applied to a small oboe played in the Abruzzi region, esp. in the Christmas season. The word is also sometimes applied to flutes and bagpipes.
