Etymology: < photo- comb. form + -meter comb. form2. Compare French photomètre (J. A. De Luc 1778, in Philos. Trans. Royal Soc. 68 487; this paper was published simultaneously in English and French (compare quot. 1779 at main sense)). Compare also post-classical Latin photometrum (1760):1760 J. H. Lambert Photometria 7 Optandum certe esset, ut excogitaretur Photometrum thermometro analogum, quod lumini expositum ejus intensitatem atque claritatem indicaret.
