Origin: A borrowing from Portuguese. Etymon: Portuguese piaçaba.
Etymology: < Brazilian Portuguese piaçaba (also as piassaua (1651), piasaba (1678), piaçava (a1696), piassaba (1711); earlier as priasaua (1630)) < Tupi pïa'sau̯a (Martius Dict. Tupi 1867). Adopted as a scientific Latin specific epithet in Leopoldinia piassaba (A. R. Wallace Palm Trees of Amazon (1853) 17).Many English dictionaries give the stress as piˈassava. The stress in Tupi is on the penultimate syllable.
1. More fully piassava palm. Either of two South American palms, Attalea funifera and Leopoldinia piassaba, from the leaf-bases of which a coarse fibre is obtained. Later also: the African palm Raphia vinifera.
