Origin: Apparently a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: English pianolian.
Etymology: Apparently an altered form of pianolian, proposed by Edwin Votey (see sense 1) as a blend of piano n.2 and Aeolian (in the name of the Aeolian Company of New York, to whom Votey demonstrated his device in c1896). Compare -ola suffix2.
1. A device by means of which a piano may be played automatically, using a piano roll. Now usually: a piano which incorporates a device for automated play; a player-piano.A proprietary name.The prototype of the piano-playing device which came to be known as the pianola was constructed in Detroit in 1895 by Edwin Scott Votey (1856–1931); in its original form it consisted of a cabinet placed in front of a piano, with felt-covered wooden ‘fingers’ which would depress the keys in accordance with impulses controlled by a piano roll.
