Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: photo- comb. form, magnetic adj.
Etymology: < photo- comb. form + magnetic adj. Compare French photomagnétique (1842).A corresponding Italian word has not been traced in the writings of D. Morichini (compare quot. 1858 at sense 1).
Physics.
1. Designating electromagnetic rays formerly supposed to be capable of magnetizing steel. Obsolete. rare.Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
