1937 Ann. Reg. 1936 63 Electron diffraction examination of engine cylinders showed that a substantial Beilby layer is formed by the ‘running in’ process.

1958 A. D. Merriman Dict. Metall. 16/2 Beilby Layer. Beilby's experiments led him to conclude that the action of polishing a metal surface caused the surface layer to flow like a liquid and then to solidify without recrystallisation, forming an amorphous layer.
