Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin phytophagus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin phytophagus herbivorous (1794 in the passage translated in quot. 1797 at sense 1; < phyto- phyto- comb. form + -phagus : see -phagous comb. form) + -ous suffix. Compare French phytophage herbivorous (1808). Compare later phytophagy n. Compare earlier zoophagous adj.
