Etymology: < scientific Latin Phytophaga, group name (G. J. Billberg 1820, applied to insects; T. H. Huxley 1871, applied to sloths; < phyto- phyto- comb. form + -phaga , plural form of -phagus : see -phagous comb. form) + -an suffix. Compare Italian fitofago , noun (1834). Compare earlier phytophagous adj., zoophagan n.Compare Phytophaga, name of a genus of gall midges including the Hessian fly (C. Rondani 1840).
