Origin: A borrowing from Polish. Etymon: Polish pierogi.
Etymology: < Polish pierogi, plural of pieróg < Russian pirog (see pirog n.).The spelling with per- is especially, though not exclusively, Canadian. The U.S. regional form with medial -d- is said to be due to the flapped Polish r. Some forms may reflect transmission via another language (in the case of pirohi perhaps Ukrainian).
Chiefly North American.
a. With plural agreement, or collectively. A dish, of Polish and Eastern European origin, consisting of small, usually semicircular, dough cases or dumplings filled with any of a variety of savoury or sweet fillings, and cooked by boiling or steaming; (also) such dumplings individually. Cf. pirog n., pirozhok n.
