Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Pīerius , -an suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin Pīerius of or belonging to Pieria, of or relating to the Muses + -an suffix. Compare classical Latin Pīeria Pieria < ancient Greek Πιερία . In sense 2 after scientific Latin Pieris Pieris n.Compare also Old English puerisc , in sense 1 (one isolated attestation in the third Cleopatra Gloss. glossing Latin puerio, a scribal error for pierio, the ultimate source of which is Aldhelm Carmen de virginitate 1717 Musica Pierio resonent et carmina cantu).
1. Of or belonging to Pieria, a district of the Greek region of Macedonia just north of Mount Olympus, regarded as the home of the Muses in Greek and Roman mythology. Hence: of or relating to the Muses, or (by extension) poetry and learning; poetic. Pierian spring n. the fountain or source of poetic inspiration (usually in figurative context).
