Etymology: Ultimately < ancient Greek -γναθος, combining form (in e.g. ἑτερόγναθος (of a horse) with one side of the mouth harder than the other) of γνάθος jaw ( < the same Indo-European base as chin n.¹), frequently after formations in scientific Latin -gnathi , -gnatha (formations in which are found from the first half of the 19th cent.), or French -gnathe . Compare gnatho- comb. form, -gnathic comb. form, -gnathous comb. form.Earliest in the 17th cent. in the isolated early borrowing tetragnath adj. and n. at tetra- comb. form 1.
