Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Physophora.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Physophora, genus name ( P. Forsskål Descriptiones animalium(1775) 119; the altered form Physsophora is attributed to Oken 1815) < physo- physo- comb. form + -phora , neuter plural of -phorus -phore comb. form. Compare French Physophores , plural noun (1808). In sense 2, probably after scientific Latin Physophorae, subfamily name ( J. F. Brandt Prodromus descriptionis animalium(1835) 32 ).
Zoology.
1. A genus of pelagic siphonophores, characterized by a long hydrosome, a relatively small pneumatophore, and several nectocalyces; an animal of this genus.
