Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Photinia.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Photinia, genus name (J. Lindley in Trans. Linn. Soc. 13 (1822) 103) < ancient Greek ϕωτεινός shining, bright, luminous ( < ϕωτ- , ϕῶς light (see photo- comb. form) + an extended form of the Indo-European base of -νος , suffix forming nouns) + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix¹, so called on account of the glossy foliage of many species.

A genus of deciduous or evergreen shrubs and small trees (family Rosaceae), native chiefly to eastern Asia and western North America, some species of which are cultivated for their ornamental foliage and berries; (also photinia) a plant of this genus.
