单词 behest
释义

behestn.

/bɪˈhɛst/
Forms: Old English behǽs, Middle English bihese, biheaste, Middle English–1500s biheste, byheste, Middle English–1500s beheste, Middle English be-, bi-, byheest(e, Middle English–1500s bihest, byhest, 1500s–1600s beheast, Middle English– behest.
Etymology: Old English behǽs (feminine) (accusative behǽse ) was the regular representation of Germanic *bihait-ti-, abstract noun < bihait-an , in Old English behátan to behight v. (see Sievers, Ags. Gr. §232); thence, early Middle English bihese , soon altered to bihes-te , by form analogy with words in -te , Old English -t . For full phonetic history see hest n. The Old English bihǽs , like the verb bihátan , occurs only in the sense of ‘promise, vow,’ but in Middle English biheste acquired the sense of the simple hǽs , hest n. < hátan ‘to command’; see hight n.3 Compare the equivalent behote n., Old English behát neuter, with its Middle English variants behete n., behight n.
