Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek πικρός , -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πικρός bitter (see picro- comb. form) + -ite suffix1. In sense 1 after German Picrites (J. F. Blumenbach Handb. der Naturgeschichte (ed. 5, 1797) xii. 584). In sense 2 after German Pikrit (G. Tschermak 1866, in Sitzungsber. der Kaiserlichen Akad. der Wissensch. (Math.-Nat. Classe) 53 262).
