Etymology: Either < physio- comb. form1 + -logic comb. form, after physiology n., or < post-classical Latin physiologicus relating to natural theology (late 2nd cent. in Tertullian), relating to natural philosophy (5th cent.), relating to physiology (1696) < Hellenistic Greek ϕυσιολογικός of or for inquiry into nature, especially the nature of man < ancient Greek ϕυσιολόγος (see Physiologus n.) + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare Middle French, French physiologique relating to nature (1547), relating to physiology (1751), Italian fisiologico relating to nature (1561). Compare earlier physiological adj.
