1. Chemistry. A salt or ester, or an anion, of a phosphoric acid; esp. = orthophosphate n. Often: spec. (a) such a compound of calcium or another metal as a constituent of cereals, minerals, rocks, etc.; (b) such a derivative of a sugar, nucleoside, etc., in a living organism. Also: a radical or group derived from a phosphoric acid.
