Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ϕορός , zooid n.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ϕορός (adjective) bearing (see phoroscope n.) + zooid n. Compare earlier gonozooid n. at gono- comb. form , gastrozooid n., and slightly later oozooid n.
Zoology.
In thaliacean tunicates of the order Doliolida: a type of zooid which develops from a median bud of an oozooid and gives rise to gonozooids.

Challenger XXVII The second or sexual generation is polymorphous, and includes three distinct forms, which are known as nutritive forms, foster forms, and reproductive forms. For these I propose the names Gastrozooid, Phorozooid, and Gonozooid respectively.
1923 L. A. Borradaile Animal & its Environment v. 149 Probuds which arrive later..are known as the ‘median buds’ and later, when they have developed, as ‘phorozooids’. These have much the build of their mother, to whom they are attached.
1994 E. E. Ruppert & R. D. Barnes Invertebr. Zool. (ed. 6) xvii. 894/1 When fully developed, the phorozooids and their attached gonozooids break free of the colony and take up an independent existence.
