Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French phoroscope.
Etymology: < French phoroscope (L. Weiller 1889, in Le génie civil 12 Oct. 373/1) < ancient Greek ϕορός (adjective) bearing ( < an ablaut variant of the base of ϕέρειν to bear: see bear v.1) + French -scope -scope comb. form.
rare. Now historical.
L. Weiller's name for: a device for transmitting a picture along a wire by means of electrical signals and reproducing it at the other end.

1889 Science 13 Dec. 401/2 A French electrician endeavors to solve the question of seeing at a distance by electricity, by means of..a special apparatus which he designates a ‘phoroscope’.
2002 W. Uricchio in F. Albera et al. Arrêt sur image/Stop Motion 106 By 1889, Lazare Weiller's Phoroscope proved capable of much the same task, except that in place of a spinning disk, Weiller used a revolving drum made of angled mirrors.
