Edinb. 1 167; < classical Latin Phorōnis of or connected with Phoroneus < Phorōneus , an ancient figure of Argive legend, the son of Inachus + -is : see -id suffix2) + -id suffix3, after scientific Latin Phoronida, phylum name (B. Hatschek Lehrb. der Zool. (1888) I. 40).
