单词 pigeon pea
释义

pigeon pean.

Brit. /ˈpɪdʒ(ᵻ)n ˌpiː/, U.S. /ˈpɪdʒ(ə)n ˌpi/
Inflections: pigeon peas, (archaic) pigeon pease.
Forms: see pigeon n. and pea n.2
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: pigeon n., pea n.2
Etymology: < pigeon n. + pea n.2, explained in Trinidad and Tobago as due to the resemblance of the curved seedpod to a pigeon (i.e. a large dove); but the feeding of such peas to domestic pigeons is also a possible explanation.A French pois-pigeon , after which sense 1 is said by N.E.D. (1906) to be modelled, has not been traced (pois de pigeon is given by Littré (1885) as a name for the field or grey pea). The French Creole names are pwadibwa (pois-de-bois), pwa kongo (pois du Congo), or pwa angol (pois d'Angole).
