Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin phȳma.
Etymology: < classical Latin phȳma swelling, tumour (Celsus) < ancient Greek ϕυματ- , ϕῦμα < ϕύειν to bring forth, make grow (see physis n.) + -μα , suffix forming nouns (see -oma comb. form).The following appears to reflect a confusion with ancient Greek ϕῦσα blast of wind:1637 N. Whiting Le Hore di Recreatione 116 Bellama's rosyes wore as white as snow, As though the Phyma did upon them blow.
Medicine. Now rare.
A swelling; esp. an inflammatory mass. In later use: spec. an area of thickened, nodular skin on the face seen in rosacea (cf. rhinophyma n.).
