Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French phonautographe.
Etymology: < French phonautographe (1857; also as phonoautographe ) < phono- phono- comb. form + auto- auto- comb. form1 + -graphe -graph comb. form. Compare phonograph n. 2.The phonautograph was developed by Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville (1817–79), French printer and inventor, in c1855–7, and marketed by Rudolph Koenig (1832–1901), German instrument maker, from 1859.
Now historical.
An apparatus for automatically recording sound vibrations, incorporating a membrane which vibrates in response to sound waves and has a point attached which makes a tracing on a revolving cylinder.
