单词 pholad
释义

pholadn.

Brit. /ˈfəʊləd/, U.S. /ˈfoʊləd/
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: French pholade; Greek ϕωλαδ-, ϕωλάς.
Etymology: < French pholade (1555 in Middle French, originally regional (Languedoc, Marseilles)) or its etymon Hellenistic Greek ϕωλαδ-, ϕωλάς pholas n. Compare Occitan folada (undated). The French and Occitan words have been suggested to derive from Hellenistic Greek as once spoken in the area (via Latin), rather than being a learned borrowing of the 16th cent. This argument rests on the earliest attested distribution of the term.
Zoology.
A burrowing bivalve mollusc of the genus Pholas or family Pholadidae.
