(1839) 612) < ancient Greek ϕοινικο- , combining form (in e.g. ϕοινικόπτερος : see phoenicopter n.) of ϕοινικ- , ϕοῖνιξ dark red (see Phoenician n. and adj.) + -χροος -coloured ( < χρώς colour < the same base as χρῶμα colour: see chrome n.) + German -it -ite suffix¹.

Mineralogy.

A mineral of the monoclinic crystal system which consists of an oxide of lead and chromium, Pb₂CrO₅, and occurs as dark red masses.
