Etymology: < classical Latin phoenīceus bright red (see phoeniceous adj.) + -an suffix. Compare earlier phoeniceous adj. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (fini·siăn, -i·ʃiăn) /fɪˈnɪsɪən/ /-ˈɪʃɪən/.
