Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin Phoca , -oid suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Phoca, genus name (see phoca n.) + -oid suffix, after scientific Latin Phocoidea, superfamily name (1890 or earlier).
Zoology.
Resembling or of the nature of a seal; (spec.) belonging to the superfamily Phocoidea, originally comprising both the true seals (phocids) and eared seals (otariids) but now restricted to the former.
